On May 21, the State Theatre Benefit Gala 2011, State Theatre’s Great American Songbook featuring Marvin Hamlisch honored Johnson & Johnson Chairman and CEO Mr. William C. Weldon, and raised $550,000 for the nonprofit performing arts center. Proceeds from the gala event support the State Theatre’s acclaimed artistic and educational programs.

Hamlisch, Pulitzer-Prize winning composer of A Chorus Line, created the original and unique Gala production in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the State Theatre. The program, which included songs from the 1920s to today, featured Hamlisch, as well as Broadway stars Montego Glover (from the musical, Memphis); Gary Mauer; and Anne Runolfsson.

Leading the way, for their eighth year as Gala Chairs, were Ann. H. Asbaty, Senior Vice President, National Accounts, CIGNA, and Efrem B. Dlugacz, Vice President, Global Benefits and Health Resources, Johnson & Johnson. “This year’s Gala went above and beyond our expectations and we applaud the combined efforts of an incredible Gala Committee and Theatre staff as well as the support of individual patrons and corporate sponsors,” commented Gala co-chairs Ann Asbaty and Efrem Dlugacz.

The State Theatre Benefit Gala 2011 honored Mr. William C. Weldon, Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, for his commitment to the community and outstanding contributions to the growth and advancement of the performing arts in New Brunswick.

“We were thrilled to honor Mr. Weldon at this year’s Gala. Under Bill’s leadership, Johnson & Johnson has made a tremendous impact on the arts community and  it is through this support that the State Theatre has been able to grow and sustain its nationally renowned education and outreach programs, reaching  thousands of students, teachers, and other members of the public each year,” added Mark W. Jones, State Theatre President & CEO.

More than 550 patrons attended the Black-Tie Dinner Dance at New Brunswick’s The Heldrich Hotel. Among the attendees were community, arts, business and civic leaders from central New Jersey and around the state. Click here to read more...
