The Richard B. Sellars Fund for Artistic Excellence
The State Theatre has established a fund in honor and memory of the late Richard B. Sellars (1915 – 2010), leader of the campaign to preserve the State Theatre for future generations. Mr. Sellars was Chairman & CEO of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies from 1973 to 1976 and also a trustee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1981 to 1996.
As first chairman of the New Brunswick Cultural Center, Mr. Sellars provided the vision, leadership and generous personal support that inspired hundreds of other donors to fund the renovation and reopening of the State Theatre, which sat vacant for almost a decade.
On April 24, 1988, the theater came to life as a performing arts center with a triumphal concert by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Over the past 23 years, the State Theatre has been a centerpiece of the revitalization of downtown New Brunswick and a shining example of urban redevelopment through the arts.
Making Art Happen!
The Richard B. Sellars Fund for Artistic Excellence will provide vitally needed funds for original productions and performance enhancements to increase the artistry and excellence on the State Theatre stage. Underwriting the performing arts gives an immediate excitement and satisfaction—you can see the results of your gift on the stage at the State Theatre!
As a donor to the Sellars Fund, you aid President & CEO Mark W. Jones and his team in creating and presenting performing arts with energy and uncompromising standards, including new and exciting artists who challenge, inspire, and expand horizons.
A program will be presented annually in honor of Mr. Sellars’ lasting contributions to the Theatre.
