PRESIDENT/CEO
 
The State Theatre is seeking candidates for President/CEO. The President serves as the primary vision caster for the institution and therefore develops and guides artistic policy in conjunction with the Board of Trustees. The President oversees all operations and departments of the organization; implements the policies of the Board of Trustees; ensures viability of the organization’s financial condition through balanced operating budgets and development of the theater’s resources (e.g., endowment fund, building improvements, equipment acquisition, etc.); maintains a positive public image for the theater with all constituencies; and serves as chief fundraiser for the organization.
 
The President must be a leader who can work with the board, staff and volunteers to take this institution to a higher level of excellence and service. S/he must have experience as a CEO and be well acquainted with the performing arts industry and its key players, be adept at programming, at ease with numbers and finances, and a dynamo fund-raiser. 
 
The President will be required to interact with a variety of constituencies and must have a compelling personality and integrity which allows her/him to inter-mingle effortlessly and seamlessly. S/he must be well spoken and have extraordinary writing and communication skills that enable her/him to rigorously defend a position as well as sell a new idea and direction.

PROGRAMMING MANAGER
 
The State Theatre is seeking candidates for Programming Manager. This position reports directly to the President/CEO of the theater. Major responsibility is to procure all artists and attractions presented by the State Theatre as coordinated and approved by the President.

Specific Duties:  
 
•   Research, monitor and mine industry data regarding touring artists and attractions for the performing arts (dance, theatre, serious music, Broadway) and for popular entertainments (contemporary music, comedy)
•   Maintain constant communications with scores of artist agencies, artists, theatre groups, presenting colleagues and all others who buy, sell, create, distribute, market, and otherwise traffic in live entertainment
•   Negotiate booking contracts with a working familiarity with a variety of deals ranging from straight fee to more complicated backend splits 
•   Prepare all show budgets, suggest ticket scales, and project anticipated audiences
•   Administer all performance contracts and track the Theatre’s compliance with their terms
•   Serve as liaison between artist/management and the State Theatre through post show settlements
•   Advise and collegially work with the Marketing and Development Departments to maximize sales campaigns and promotional efforts for all presentations
•   Co-manage the State Theatre calendar in conjunction with the Director of Operations
•   From time to time, serve as associate producer for Theatre-produced shows and events such as recurring festivals (NJ Blues and Jazz Festival, Urban Arts Festival, Hub City Carnivale) and new productions

Gift Shop Attendant – Part-time

•   Operate and maintain assigned Gift Shop area
•   Maintain and assist in the settlement of a cash drawer
•  
Assist Gift Shop Manager with monthly inventory counts
•   Master knowledge of MICROS point of sales system (Training provided by theater)
•  
Work with management to ensure proper inventory levels are maintained
•  
Responsible for proper product setup and ensuring work area is cleaned and restocked at the end of every shift
•  
Enforce State Theatre policies and procedures while demonstrating exceptional customer service
•   Master knowledge of all State Theatre patron services and amenity locations

Marketing/PR Internship:

The Marketing/PR intern will work closely with staff to implement marketing, promotions, public relations and audience development initiatives. The intern may also work on audience analysis, press database management, copywriting, editing, and other projects as needed. Internships are unpaid.

Graphic Design Internship:

The State Theatre is seeking innovative graphic design interns to design and produce marketing materials for the State Theatre’s 2008-2009 Season of performances. The internship requires a minimum of 15 hours anytime between Mon-Fri (9-5:30pm).

Responsibilities:
  •    Design and produce promotional materials such as posters, flyers, advertisements, etc.
  •    Design web graphics for the State Theatre website and internet advertising.
  •    Assist the Art Director with the creative workload

Requirements:
  •    Experience using QuarkXPress and Photoshop
  •    Knowledge of Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, and HTML a plus
  •    Familiar with a Mac

Internships are unpaid, however, students may arrange to receive college credit.

Development Internship:
The State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, one of the country’s foremost performing arts presenters, seeks an energetic and self-motivated college student with strong writing and interpersonal skills for a fall internship (2-3 days per week) with the development department of the State Theatre.

Responsibilities and duties include assistance in:

  •    Writing letters of inquiry, gift acknowledgements, and proposals; 
  •    Researching individual, corporate and foundation prospects and donors;
  •    Coordinating various projects;
  •    Maintaining and updating contact lists.
 
Qualified candidates include those with a major in English, communications, public relations, marketing or related fields (although all majors interested in work experience may apply) and in good academic standing. Candidates must possess strong writing skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet is required.
 
This is a NON-paid internship, however, students may arrange to receive college credit. Additionally, interns will be compensated for expenses related to off-site responsibilities. The State Theatre offers a creative work environment and is an equal opportunity employer.

Education Internship:
Internships may focus on theater education management and/or assisting with the State Theatre’s programs for schools. Interns will be able to acquire practical theater education experience at one of the premiere non-profit theaters in the region.

Specific Responsibilities May Include:

  •    Provide administrative support for Education staff, provide support for special events, workshops, classes and school shows. 
  •    Contribute to the development of the curriculum both in-house and in the schools.
  •    Opportunities to research possible grant/funding opportunities for theater education work.
 
Requirements:
  •    Strong commitment to theater and education 
  •    Enjoy working with others—interns need to interact successfully with a wide range of personalities including staff, artists, volunteers, board members, donors, and the general public; on the phone and in person 
  •    Demonstrate computer skills: familiarity with word processing, databases, and spreadsheets is preferable
  •    Commit to a consistent schedule for a minimum of one month

Internships are unpaid, however, students may arrange to receive college credit.
